8/F Platform - here and there
I was once lost on me
Presented by the Hong Kong Dance Company, the “8/F Platform” is a dance laboratory that embraces choreography, performance, education, demonstration, multi-disciplinary collaboration, and audience development. The Platform aims to bring together audiences, dancers and artists, encourage exchange and interaction, and serve as a catalyst for creativity.
A triple-bill programme here and there will be staged on 17-19 December 2021 at Hong Kong Dance Company’s 8/F Platform at Sheung Wan Civic Centre, comprising new choreographic works by three ingenious dancers from the Hong Kong Dance Company: We by Chen Rong, I’m here by He Yongning and More – Human by Ong Tze Shen. Three curious minds, three dance works, three perspectives of “existence”. The session on 18 December at 7:45pm will be available for online live streaming with 4K quality as well. 8/F Platform Online Talk Series: INSPIRE THE NEXT includes talks given by renowned artists – Yuri Ng, Dick Wong, Tang Shu-wing, Janice Poon, Edward Lam and Adam Wong. They will share their experiences in creating art – dance, drama, theatre, film and life.

Choreographer: Chen Rong Chen Rong graduated from the affiliated school of the Beijing Dance Academy before entering the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts on a full scholarship. He joined the Hong Kong Dance Company in 2002. Three years later, he received an Asian Cultural Council scholarship sponsored by Citibank, which enabled him to take classes at The Ailey School in New York. He has performed major and principal roles in The Smiling, Proud Wanderer; Angel Falls; The Legend of Mulan; Qingming Riverside; Feng Shui; Red Poppies; L'Amour Immortel and A Tale of the Southern Sky. He has also choreographed Dancing Emotions and Fly for the “8/F Platform”. Chen received the Hong Kong Dance Award in 2008 for his portrayal of Hu Le in Angel Falls and Dongfang Bubai in The Smiling, Proud Wanderer. |

Choreographer: He Yongning He Yongning graduated from Guangdong Dance School majoring in Chinese dance, and obtained a Bachelor’s degree with first class honours from the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts in 2011. She received several awards and scholarships during her studies. She joined the Hong Kong Dance Company in 2012. He’s solo dance piece Hesitate garnered the Gold Award and Outstanding Female Dancer Award at the Bauhinia Cup International Invitational Competition 2013. She was invited to perform at the first Open Dance event at the Jao Tsung-I Academy in 2014, the Beppu Contemporary Arts Festival 2015, the NDA 1st Asian Solo & Duo Challenge for MASDANZA 2016 in Seoul and i-Dance Festival Opening 2016. She choreographed 4 Times 13=? for Hong Kong Dance Company’s 8/F Platform X - A Decade of Creativity in 2016. In 2017 she was invited by renowned choreographer Wayne McGregor to take part in a residency programme in London. She performed a major role in The Moon Opera in 2021. |

Choreographer: Ong Tze Shen Born and raised in Penang, Ong Tze-shen began dancing at the age of 13 and has participated in numerous competitions and performances since then. He received full scholarships throughout his four years at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and graduated with First Class Honours in 2018. He joined Hong Kong Dance Company in the same year. Recent performances include 8/F Platform – Jing, A Tale of the Southern Sky, Convergence and Shan Shui: An Ode to Nature. He was also a researcher of HKDC’s Research study on Chinese martial arts and Chinese dance. Ong has danced in a wide variety of festivals and productions. He performed solos in Zhang Xiaoxiong’s The Homeland, Butterfly Lovers by Sheng Peiqi and Yan Xiaoqiang, Gao Chenming’s Fortune and Yan Xiaoqiang’s Autumn Thoughts. He choreographed Dating with D with Christy Poinsettia Ma and performed the work in 2017. He also produced the full-length dance theatre In The Amorphous Beings for the George Town Festival in Penang 2017 and took part in CAMPING 2018 at the Centre National de la Danse in Paris. He was awarded 2nd prize in the 17th Seoul International Dance Competition (Contemporary dance division) in 2020. In 2021, he was invited by Hong Kong Street Dance Development Alliance to choreograph More Human for The Box 2.0. |

Established in 1981, the Hong Kong Dance Company (HKDC) was incorporated in 2001 as a charitable and non-profit-making institution, and is financially supported by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. As a cultural ambassador of Hong Kong, HKDC constantly brings the city’s unique artistic style to the world by touring to different cities across the globe, engaging local audiences and encouraging cultural exchange. In recent years, it has brought its award-winning productions to the Lincoln Center in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Sony Centre in Toronto, the Concourse Theatre in Sydney and the Southbank Centre in London, among others.
About Freespace
Freespace is Hong Kong’s new centre for contemporary performance. Located in the heart of the Art Park, Freespace presents multi-genre performances and events, produces boundary-pushing collaborations, and promotes new ways of seeing and experiencing performance.
