(Hong Kong – 21 May, 2019) From the 13th June 2019, Opera Gallery will celebrate romance, dream-like figures, shape and form in the Wyndham Street gallery thanks to André Brasilier’s solo exhibition ‘André Brasilier in Hong Kong’.
Celebrating his 90th Birthday this year, Brasilier will be showcasing a selection of works that document his momentous career in an exhibition that focuses on natural beauty and Fauvist landscapes taking inspiration from his love for the equestrian world and his wife and muse; Chantal Brasilier.
All crafted with either the use of oil on canvas or watercolours, the artist blends a range of Abstraction and Expressionism leading to a distinct personal style of schematised nature. Brasilier’s paintings depict a peaceful, comfortable world, free from care, in a very simple, stylish manner and bathed in accommodating sunlight.
The reoccurring themes of horses, nature, music and women, in Brasilier’s artwork reflect his constant source of motivation. Set against simplistic and romantic backgrounds, the artist says he draws from language, sounds and colours in an attempt to create a natural beauty untouched by daily trivialities and events, making Brasilier an anomaly in the contemporary zeitgeist.
With influences of Expressionism and Japanese ‘Edo’ print work, his personalised style does not attempt to imitate form, but instead expresses emotion, human intimacy and experience through modest hues and idiosyncratic techniques.
Born in 1929 in Saumur, France, Brasilier possessed a natural inclination for painting at an early age. He studied at the Ecole de Beaux-Arts, national school of fine arts in Paris from 20-years-old, and was awarded the Florence Blumenthal Award and the acclaimed Premier Grand Prix de Rome scholarship just the following year.
Painting for over 65 years, Brasilier’s work has been sold and exhibited at various galleries and museums around the world, gaining him a large international following.
As part of the Opera Gallery showcase, the exhibition features paintings dating from 1958, along with 21 of Brasilier’s newer works from 2018.
