Orange Wine
The Le Soula winery was founded in 2001 by Gérard Gauby, the Roussillon's most highly respected vigneron. It is known for its high altitude vineyards, located at the foothills of the Pyrénées in the French Fenouillèdes region of the Roussillon. The name ‘Fenouillèdes’ translates as French for fennel, which commonly grows wild in the garrigues vegetation. This accidental addition to the vineyard supplements a surprising hint of fennel and aniseed to the nose of Le Soula’s white wines. Combining creativity with the freshness and vitality of Le Soula, one wine stands out; the Maceration du Soula is an experimental mixed-vintage blend. Made up of 75% Vermentino, 22% Macabeu, and 3% Sauvignon Blanc, this wine tastes like white, is made like a red, but bears a vibrant orange colour. Intriguingly captivating, its characteristics are a taste with notes of orange peel and stone fruit with a nutty undertone.
Sustainable Fruit Farming
Qupe Wines produces top quality wines from the Santa Maria Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard, in Santa Barbara, California. Starting in 2005, owners Bob Lindquist, and his wife Louisa Sawyer Lindquist made biodynamic preparations in the soil before the vines were planted. They filled cow horns with combined ingredients and buried them underground, transforming the vineyard into a self-contained, living organism. Today, the winery specialises in Rhone-style wines, producing 20,000 cases a year, and 3 different bottlings of Syrah, including the cherry red 2014 Qupé, Syrah. Surprisingly red fruited; this wine is elegant yet straightforward, tasting firm and juicy with a light spice.
South Africa’s Finest
Run by the most innovative and inspired winemaker in South Africa, Sadie Family Wines started in 1999. Eben Sadie started his winemaking career working for Charles Back’s Spice Route-labelled wines, before breaking out on his own with his first release of Sadie Columella wine in 2000. Named after one of the wine trade’s earliest scribes, Columella is predominantly Syrah, blended with old-vine fruit from eight Swartland vineyards, including Mourvèdre, Grenache, Carignan, and Cinsault. The distinction of Columella derives from its terroir, the character of the vintage, and a restrained winemaking process, by which grape picking takes place in the first few hours of daylight. Packaged into flat boxes, and transferred to a refrigerated truck, the grapes are transported to the cellar as quickly as possible and kept at 5–8°C until early the following day, when finally only the perfect grapes are selected for final use.
A Taste of History
The Pisa Moorings Surveyor Thompson vineyard was planted in four distinct blocks; the North Block, the Terraces, the South Block and the Moon Block. Each with its own special characteristics, these blocks belong to Hong Kong based couple, David Hall-Jones and PM Chan. The wine is named after David’s great-great-grandfather, New Zealand's first Surveyor General, who was known amongst locals as Mr Surveyor Thompson. In 1857, Surveyor Thomson carried out a marathon survey of Otago, covering the entire province on horseback, from Waiau River to Mount Cook. Now incorporating organic and biodynamic viticulture, both the vines and the terroir express themselves in the 2016 Domaine Thomson Explorer Pinot Noir, with a silky elegantly textured palate, showing great depth, tension and persistence.
Products from the specially selected wineries are all now available in Hong Kong, to be purchased from fine wine retailer Berry Bros. & Rudd.
