(Jean Dubuffet, Site avec 4 Personnages, 50x67cm, acrylic on paper, 1981)
(Hong Kong – 24 April 2018) French Maze, an art exhibition in honour of the French Masters from the post-war to contemporary periods, will feature 27 artworks from ten artists created between 1949 and 2017; all of which will be showcased together for the first time in Hong Kong at Opera Gallery.
Deeply rooted in the pages of Art History, French art has greatly influenced the European and world art scenes, and from 17 May to 30 June, visitors can explore this beautifully curated series. Both figurative and abstract, the collection illustrates highly personal memories and ideas, interweaving the artists’s reflections and their unique artistic paths.
French Maze will showcase different styles and mediums in the French art scene, with works by Marc Chagall, Bernard Buffet, Jean Dubuffet and Mathieu Georges to the contemporary Andre Brasilier, Pierre Soulages, Chu The-Chun, Robert Combas, Andre’ Lanskoy and Haudressy Pascal.
Exhibition Highlights
The colourful, dreamlike world of early modernist Marc Chagall is evident in his art – his poetic and figurative style is filled with fanciful images of flying lovers, musicians, flowers and animals to symbolise his intense personal universe, combining a complex tapestry of multiple narratives.
Integral French artist Jean Dubuffet, best known for his development of art brut (or “raw art”), is also showcased and guests will be able to view his idealistic approach to aesthetics and instinctive vision that breaks away from the norm. Unfettered by cultural influences and restrictions, his art embraces a more authentic and humanistic expression.
Marc Chagall, Les amoureux le soir, 70x55,4cm, watercolour, pastel and pencil on paper laid on board, 1949
Contemporary artist Andre Brasilier’s work is a blend of abstraction, expressionism and something distinctly his own, typified by a whimsical and breezy lyricism. His works often feature themes and motifs like women, horses and nature, reflected in a wistful setting and peaceful world, all with delicate composition and a harmony of colours bathed in soft, cool light.
Andre Brasilier, Dans l’lle de Sylt, 60x92, oil on canvas, 2016
Through 27 works created by ten artists over the past seventy years, this ambitious undertaking traces ways in which French artists have changed the course of art by deftly transforming the language of paintings since the post-war period. Works on view will reveal their makers inventing radical new forms and processes of tactility and the idiosyncrasies of the artists’ own hands.
