Accidental Art is pleased to present Occult Complexion, an exhibition with works by artists Yiyi WANG and Chuntao LAU. Occult complexion describes the phenomenon between object attributes and natural texture, projected and interpreted with transcendental perceptions. Carefully curated, the exhibition explores the complexity of how common matter can be observed, perceived and attached to unique sensibility, re-examining the relationships among self-identity, humans, nature and urban civilization.
Yiyi and Chuntao use various techniques to visualize their narratives, often with fine lines and distinct detail to communicate highly figurative ideas.
About Artists
Yiyi Wang (王乙伊)
Yiyi Wang was born in Beijing, China in 1995, immigrated to Hong Kong in 2009 and graduated with a Scholastic Award achievement from the Academy of Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University in 2017. Yiyi focuses on contemporary figurative style in ink and color. As a Beijing-born Hong Kong resident, Yiyi’s art preserves personal stories and memories while simultaneously explores the dynamics of self-identity caught between these two contrasting cities.
Her works have been exhibited in Wei Rong Painting Class Joint Exhibition at Cawah Arts Gallery and HKFORWARD17 at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery.
The character delicately portrayed in “Candied Haws” is the artist as a child, and recounts a tale of identity anxiety. The “Shell” and “Wood” series display the original textures of objects in nature with subtle and drifting brushstrokes - a common practice in traditional Chinese landscapes. They reveal the similarities and projection between objects and their natural landscapes. In Yiyi’s paintings, meditative tones co-exist with figurative images, presenting observers with an amalgam of everyday complexities.
Chuntao LAU (Jay 劉鎮滔)
Born in Hong Kong in 1994, Chuntao Lau is a local illustration artist. In 2017, Chuntao graduated from Hong Kong Baptist University, majoring in Visual Arts. His works are mostly in ink, color, acrylic and silk screen prints. Chuntao is known for deforming objects with delicate texture and patterns. As a witness of the ongoing changes in Hong Kong, Chuntao focuses on revealing different facets of the city and its residents with imaginative illustrations.
Recent exhibitions include Art in the branch: Corporate Social Responsibility - China CITIC Bank HK, Metropark Hotel Art Collaboration HK, Crash Printing Exhibition HK, Asian Students and Young Artists Art Festival (ASYAAF), South Korea and so on.
In contrast to a bright color palette, his works are often melancholic in contemplation of a fictional and occult world, embodying the double nature of reality and perception. Chuntao is imaginative in application of hyper-realistic and unusual patterns to the deformed shapes, emphasizing the connection between human, common objects and urbanism.
Curator's Words
The selection of works by the two artists, although very different in terms of artistic languages and mediums, is united by a similar approach towards the investigation of the topic Occult Complexion.
Both artists focus on “complexion”— the relationship between texture and object. Yiyi paints on wooden boards with ink, a medium made from wood charcoal. Chuntao’s work features animal and human-like shapes using unconventional mediums such as grains, lines, fabrics and textures.
Chuntao and Yiyi also share the same insight: to explore the complex connection between object and observer, human and nature, and most importantly, between individuals and ourselves. Their artworks are both inspired by observations and true personal stories.
As young Asian artists, Chuntao and Yiyi bring new values and exciting energy into the Hong Kong art scene from different backgrounds. Through collaboration and dialogue, Occult Complexion challenges our perception of ourselves and modernism, confronts the role of painting in new media art and gives insight into the dynamics of contemporary art Hong Kong.
