The Apple You are Eating Is Probably 6 Months Old
HK Startup Helps You Buy Better Food
(For immediate release) Hong Kong, 16th Feb, 2017 -- If you are like most time-starved urbanites, you probably buy most of your groceries at supermarkets. However, big-box retailers are notoriously bad at offering product information, such as supermarket apples are frequently picked 6 months ago and imported vegetables more than a week old. Today, Jou Sun launched a new website to help you buy better food from a curated selection of 25+ specialty vendors. The Hong Kong startup has pioneered a checkout process and delivery service that makes it possible for you to purchase fresh local pork from Hong Kong’s Fu Ying Butcher, organic free range eggs from Thailand’s Hilltribe Eggs and farm fresh vegetables from Qinyuan’s Magic Season Organics in a matter of minutes. And your order can arrive next day during a 2-hour time slot of your choosing.
Jou Sun is laser focused on putting product quality and customer service first, which prompted the startup to tighten their due diligence process when vetting vendors. The startup meets with each vendor in person, and requires them to supply valid food licenses and organic certificates. To optimize the due diligence process, operations flow and to speed up delivery, the startup poured millions of dollars into designing and developing software. Jou Sun’s sleek new website is powered by a suite of order management and delivery software, which enables tech-unsavvy vendors to easily set up online stores and start selling within days.
When customers buy products from multiple shops on Jou Sun, their orders are automatically dispatched to corresponding vendors, informing them of the products ordered and delivery arrangement. At predetermined time slots, vendors deliver their orders to Jou Sun’s distribution center for consolidation. Within hours, these orders are picked up by delivery agents and sent to customers. Jou Sun magnifies the benefits of shared economy by helping vendors crowd-source the cheapest and quickest home delivery routes, ensuring that orders arrive at customer’s home at their freshest. Currently 94% of deliveries arrive within the specified delivery times.
“It took us a long time to build the trust and know-how necessary to digitally enable traditional businesses,” says Jessica Lam, Managing Partner. “The first time a local pork butcher agreed to learn using a smartphone to take orders, our whole office cheered, it was a big milestone for us.” Currently, the startup only works with food suppliers that have distribution rights in Hong Kong, but their vision is to create the world’s largest fresh food discovery and delivery platform. “Imagine a day when you can re-order that freshly picked apple that you tasted when traveling in New Zealand, directly from the orchard. That is what technology can do for food.” says Lam.
