Excitement and anticipation filled the air at MTR Sai Ying Pun Station today (21 March 2015) as an Open Day was held for local residents to familiarise themselves with the station layout and facilities before the station opens on Sunday, 29 March 2015, marking the commencement of full railway service on the 3-km Island Line extension to Western District.
Around 3,800 visitors took the opportunity to try out the new 3-in-1 Ticketing Machines and the new design of ticket gates as well as experience the added convenience provided by the all-weather pedestrian network in the unpaid area of the station that connects uphill and downhill areas of the district. The 800 square metres of artworks in the station provided a highlight for many visitors.
“We are delighted to see how excited local residents are about the opening of Sai Ying Pun Station. The Island Line extension was designed as a community railway to respond to the needs of the local community. This station will not only bring MTR’s world-class railway service to the doorstep of one of Hong Kong’s longest established neighbourhood, but will also provide more convenience to pedestrians in the district,” said Dr Jacob Kam, Operations Director of MTR Corporation.
Also today, MTR Corporation presented certificates of appreciation to Central and Western District Councillors, West Island Line (WIL) Community Liaison Group members and the WIL Youth Ambassadors to thank them for their immense support and close partnership during the construction and commissioning of the Island Line extension to Western District.
