On 30 September 2019 at the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall, 8:00pm City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong (CCOHK) will launch its 20th anniversary season under the baton of newly engaged Chief Conductor Vahan Mardirossian. The double celebration will feature French violin legend Augustin Dumay in a performance of Beethoven’s grand violin concerto, one of the happiest works Beethoven ever wrote. Vahan Mardirossian will also conduct CCOHK in performances of Sibelius’ uplifting Andante Festivo and Poulenc’s delightfully vivacious Sinfonietta. To further introduce the programme Vahan Mardirossian will give a pre-concert talk at 7:15 pm at the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall. Admission to the talk is free for ticket holders. Tickets to the concert are priced at $400, $300, $220 with half-price concessions for full-time students, senior citizens, people with disabilities and minder, and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients, are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Praised by The Strad as “one of today’s great violinists”, Augustin Dumay was born into a family of musicians and entered the Paris Conservatory at the age of ten. He won international recognition in 1979 after being invited to perform as soloist by Herbert von Karajan. Since then he has given numerous solo performances with the world’s finest orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Orchestre National de France and the major orchestras in Japan. Augustin Dumay is currently Master in Residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Brussels where he coaches a select group of highly talented young violinists, many of whom are international competition prize-winners. International critics have compared Augustin Dumay to the great violinists of the 20th century. His outstanding career includes numerous solo performances with the world’s finest orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Orchestre National de France, and collaborations with legendary conductors such as Frans Brüggen, Sir Colin Davis, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Kurt Masur, Seiji Ozawa and Yuri Temirkanov. Over the last ten years, in parallel to his international career as a violinist, Augustin Dumay has enjoyed international acclaim as a conductor both on stage and on disc. He has conducted the English Chamber Orchestra, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Varsovia and the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. From 2003 to 2013, he was Music Director of the Royal Chamber Orchestra of Wallonia (Belgium) and then Principal Guest Conductor until 2015. Since 2011 he has been the Music Director of the Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra in Osaka, Japan and has embarked on a European tour with the orchestra to Germany (Tonhalle Düsseldorf and Mozartfest Würzburg), Switzerland (Fondation Gianadda) and Italy (Festival Pianistico Internazionale di Brescia e Bergamo). Augustin Dumay appears on over 40 recordings on the Warner, Deutsche Grammophon and Onyx Classics labels. City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong
City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong (CCOHK) holds a unique position as one of Asia’s leading chamber orchestras. Members are professional musicians experienced in playing diverse styles ranging from Baroque and classical to East-West crossover, tango, Bollywood and jazz. Since its establishment in 1999 CCOHK has performed with many world-class artists including Sir James Galway, Dame Evelyn Glennie, Dame Emma Kirkby, Sir Thomas Allen, Sir Neville Marriner, Christian Lindberg, Sarah Chang, Philippe Entremont, Julian Lloyd Webber, Edgar Meyer, Branford Marsalis, Richard Galliano and The King’s Singers. The orchestra has also collaborated with celebrities including Hayley Westenra, Richard Clayderman, Robin Gibb, Dame Edna Everage and Canto-pop stars Sandy Lam, Hins Cheung and Hacken Lee.
