Chinese Dance ✕ Martial Arts Convergence – Infinity of Movement and Stillness
Led by Hong Kong Dance Company’s Artistic Director, Yang Yuntao, Convergence is a culminating work created through an interdisciplinary research study on both Chinese dance and Chinese martial arts traditions. Yang and several dancers have studied with the masters of many Southern Chinese martial art styles for three years. After taking much time to investigate, contemplate, and consolidate their learning of both martial arts spirit and routines, the team of researchers were able to find a new body language, and discover the landscape beyond.
“This study has led us to break away from our past; to chart new courses, and to remould ourselves. Formed by the confluence of our external body movements and internal consciousness, we thus experience changes to our physical condition and thus further our cause in pursuit and to experience the 'truth' and 'beauty' that lies within the performing,” Yang shared.
Convergence was first broadcast online in 2020 due to the pandemic, and was awarded the Hong Kong Dance Award for Outstanding Online Production in 2022. This December, co-presented with West Kowloon Cultural District, Convergence is finally going to debut LIVE in Hong Kong. Don’t miss it!
A Masterpiece by Helen Lai
Contemporary Dance Theatre HerStory – Unravelling esoteric writings by, of, and about women
HerStory is a contemporary extension of Nüshu (women’s script), the ancient written language developed and used exclusively by women in Jiangyong county, Hunan province, which has a four-hundred-year history.
Winner of two awards at the 2008 Hong Kong Dance Awards, HerStory is the finale of “Women’s Trilogy” series created by internationally renowned Hong Kong choreographer Helen Lai. By weaving in the writings of two female authors from Hong Kong, Xi Xi and Wong Bik-wan, along with dance, music and imagery, Lai is joining hands with Hong Kong Dance Company to re-stage HerStory in this December. Drawing on personal and collective memories, it explores women’s role in history and literature through a blend of Chinese and western practices of dance, music and imagery, and presents a powerful depiction of female identity.
Hong Kong Dance Company collaborates again with Helen Lai after the great success of restaging Nine Songs in 2021. Co-presented with West Kowloon Cultural District, the Company will reprise this contemporary dance theatre classic HerStory in December.
Convergence will make its live debut in Hong Kong at The Box, Freespace, West Kowloon Cultural District from 8 to 10 December 2023; followed by HerStory from 15 to 17 December. Tickets available now on art-mate and damai. An exclusive package discount of 15% off is offered on art-mate with limited quantities while stocks last.

A new step towards sustainability from the Cheese Specialist
Dealing with unabated carbon emissions - From farm to table, an optimized supply chain of fresh foods always targets maximum freshness. It is no big deal if the food source is next door but if it is not, speed is critical to guarantee freshness… And moving goods fast also carries a higher environmental cost, an increased carbon footprint. Aware of its unavoidable carbon emissions, Cheese Club decided to be accountable for them, addressing the matter in a more responsible way.
Towards a more sustainable online grocery model – Cheese Club benchmarked various organizations involved into carbon offset programs. It finally decided to collaborate with Climate Partner, a German reliable solutions provider for climate action. Climate Partner audited the cheese specialist’s activities and implemented a methodology to calculate all carbon emissions generated, from purchase from its suppliers to the last mile delivery to its customers. The evaluation also considers ancillary impacts, including the commute of its staff, its electricity consumption and the production and transportation of its cheese boxes and associated packaging.
By partnering with Climate Partner, the company also obtains a carbon neutral label, guaranteeing transparency and credibility to its carbon offset program. Consumers can refer to a tracking ID number to trace the amount of CO2 compensated and the selected carbon offset project. See http://www.climatepartner.com/17542-2110-1002
A socially and environmentally committed project - For its carbon offset program, Cheese Club assessed high-quality and certified projects in the Asia-Pacific region, not only supporting carbon reductions but also engaging people and stimulating local development. It is finally in India that Cheese Club has decided to invest its carbon credits with the Social Impact Project. This Gold Standard certified project provides micro-credits to low-income Indian families, enabling them to purchase more efficient cooking stoves, water filters and solar lights.
While the cooking stoves significantly reduce indoor air pollution and fosters a more sustainable usage of forest wood, the water filters provide a clean drinking water, without the necessity to boil it over an open fire before consumption. Solar lights are also much safer to use and support education and local business by extending visibility hours in India’s finishing days, affected by frequent power cuts on the grid.
Advocating responsibility on top of quality – It is encouraging news that a company like Cheese Club pioneers for a more responsible online grocery model. It is also confirming that beyond the intrinsic quality of a gourmet product, the overall efforts of a company to mitigate its impact on environment carry significant value to its consumers. Why not hope that this good and responsible practice will soon inspire similar moves from other players in the industry? A much-needed effort in Hong Kong, where almost all the food is imported!

Hong Kong Dance Company (HKDC) is thrilled to launch the 2022/23 Dance Season. Be ready to indulge yourself with our many enticing dance programmes!
For more than two years, we have had to contend with the many challenges under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite all the uncertainties we have faced, our dancers have persisted in their training during the lockdowns. They are longing to return to the theatre and to the stage. They are ready physically and mentally – to dance “Here and Now”!
The new dance season opens with Myth of the Dancing Durumi, an anthology of Korean folk dance. This eagerly anticipated show has been in the works for over two years. Undaunted by the restrictions in place during the pandemic, our dancers forged ahead in rehearsal and were able to receive personal instruction from masters in Seoul and Yanbian online. Next is the re-run of the thought-provoking dance poem Shan Shui: An Ode to Nature. It premiered to great acclaim last year and scored three nominations at the 23rd Hong Kong Dance Awards. After spending another year in contemplation, our dancers have delved deeper into their martial arts training and gained greater insight into their body movements. They look forward to the opportunity to repaint this picturesque scene.
Hong Kong Dance Company’s many iconic moments were remembered and cherished in last year’s 40th anniversary celebrations. What makes a classic in and of itself a classic? Emotion. Twirl of the Heartstrings is a production that marries dance with live music performance, coupled with high-tech visual creations. These re-imagined classic dance excerpts will give audiences an occasion to revisit many beautiful memories of our shows. Womanhood explores the theme of change of identities over time from the female perspective that tell stories embedded in our day-to-day lives.
Besides mainstage productions, HKDC’s “8/F Platform” series serves as an artistic arena to nurture young dancers and will remain a staple for audiences to enjoy innovative new works.
Hong Kong Dance Company is also dedicated to art education. Interactive performance All About The Three Kingdoms shares the beauty of traditional dance with audiences in a simple-to-understand manner. They will enjoy the lively atmosphere of the many interactive activities that await them, and gain a deeper understanding of dance. Our Children’s and Youth Troupes will present The Kids in Rainbow Jerseys. This Olympic-themed dance drama is a fine example of the indomitable spirit of perseverance that drives both dancer and athlete.
Our Outreach and Education Department has also prepared a diverse offerings of educational courses, masterclasses, performances, and more, to introduce dance in schools. As the venue partner of the Sha Tin Town Hall, HKDC also organises various thematic dance workshops to bring the joy of art further into the community. “Through thick and thin, the Company is firmly committed to bringing you quality dance works and programmes that demonstrate the harmony between traditional culture and contemporary artistic ideas. We look forward to seeing you all at the theatre!” Mr Tsang Kee-kung, MH, Board Chairman of the Hong Kong Dance Company, said.
“Dance is an art form related to both mind and body. Only by cultivating the mind and achieving a state of tranquillity can we gain strength and remain undaunted by the raging storm outside. Let’s dance — right here, right now! Hong Kong Dance Company has been your companion on the road for four decades. We look forward to sharing the journey with you for many years to come,” Mr Yang Yuntao, Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Dance Company, remarked.
The Elegant Beauty of the Dancing Crane
Korean folk dances have a refined elegance that evokes images of a durumi (Korean crane) in flight. Breathing out, the dancers effortlessly glide. Breathing in, they pause with a subtle grace. Their colourful traditional Korean costumes move in harmony with the distinctive rhythms of their folk tunes.
Hong Kong Dance Company is bringing works of Seoul and Yanbian artists together in Hong Kong for the first time, to showcase the traditional charm and contemporary elegance inherent in Korean dance.

A Waltz of Nature’s Timeless Charm
Hong Kong Dance Company draws on the imagery of nature under the brush, painting an inner world beyond the confines of time or space through dance. The dancers’ bodies become the dots, dashes, and vigorous strokes of the brush; they are the artist’s eye for rhyme, rhythm, and internal beauty.
Shan Shui: An Ode to Nature received three nominations in the Hong Kong Dance Awards 2022.

Manama, Bahrain -- (ARAB NEWSWIRE) -- The ever-evolving online landscape continues to provide new opportunities for wildlife traffickers on a virtual marketplace where chances of detection are low and profits from selling endangered wildlife can be extremely high.
The challenge is that the Internet and social networking sites facilitate the illegal trade in wildlife and its product—including but not limited to ivory products, lion and cheetah cubs, apes, parrots, birds of prey and reptile skins—through online platform advertising live animals, birds or their products to sellers and buyers. Moreover, these online platforms provide direct sellers and buyers with dedicated pages and groups to traffic wildlife, feeding larger global networks. The ease facilitated though electronic payment platforms is encouraging people to trade in wildlife especially with the encryption tools that allows these people to remain anonymous.
In order to limit the spread of illegal online wildlife trade, IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare), in cooperation with the Supreme Council for the Environment in Bahrain, is implementing a regional training workshop on combating wildlife cybercrime on 14-16 June 2022 in Manama, Bahrain. Conducted by IFAW, with technical assistance from the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), this workshop will train participants on methods to track online activities and report accounts used to illegally trade in wildlife.
“Distinguishing between legal and illegal wildlife trade is particularly challenging online – especially given the huge volume of daily transactions,” said Elsayed Mohamed, IFAW’s Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa. He continued, “There are already many threats on wildlife and their natural habitats, endangered animals cannot survive further pressure coming from the online market which is open 24/7”.
The capacity of wildlife law enforcement authorities in investigating these accounts online must be built to research and audit online accounts violating the law. Moreover, social media platforms and e-commerce sites should adopt policies to combat illegal wildlife trade to support law enforcement agencies responsible for preventing illegal wildlife trade.
The workshop was inaugurated by His Excellency Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak bin Dina, Minister of Oil and Environment and Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, who indicated in his speech that "with rapid technical development, electronic commerce has imposed itself on society, including electronic commerce in endangered species, which has contributed to the prosperity of this species. The Internet has become a major gateway for advertising wildlife, and some have exploited this technical development for illegal trade in endangered species, so it is necessary to address this illegal trade.
In addition, his Excellency stressed the importance of concerted efforts between all partners and stakeholders in order to strengthen measures and procedures to combat wildlife cybercrime, through tightening control over content, and an immediate response to address these violations. His Excellency also reviewed the efforts made by the Kingdom of Bahrain toward combating the illegal trade of endangered species starting with the accession of the Kingdom of Bahrain to CITES in 2012 until the issuance of Environmental Law No. (7) Of 2022, through the national law on regulating and controlling international trade in endangered species.
This regional training workshop is the first of its kind in the region and includes participants from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Jordan.

Muscat, Oman (ARAB NEWSWIRE) – Shark populations continue to decline due to unsustainable shark catch practices, including shark finning. Hence, as many countries begin to prioritize the importance of marine life protection and fishing regulations, Oman takes the first step to outline science-based shark catch assessments to further regulate shark catch and trade in accordance with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of wild fauna and flora (CITES), with the support of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).
In the Middle East and North Africa region, Oman will be the first country to carry a study in the direction of outlining a science based shark catch assessment known as “CITES Non-Detrimental Findings” (NDFs). Funded by the Shark Conservation Fund, and with the technical support of Save our Seas Foundation, the three-day workshop will start on 17 May in Muscat, Oman.
What are CITES NDFs?
CITES is a convention regulating the international trade in endangered species between countries, which are referred to as “parties”.
To regulate and systemize the international trade process, CITES designated “Appendix II” list for species which are allowed to be internationally traded for commercial purposes on the condition that it is regulated and its export will not be detrimental to the survival of that species in their natural habitats.
The decision on whether or not the export is detrimental will be determined by the Scientific Authority of the State of export based on the NDF assessment.
NDF is carried out through data collection, which is the core purpose of the NDF. Therefore, to complete the NDF, the data collected must comprise the biological characteristics of the species—breeding period, species count and survival, the pressure on the species in terms of catch and trade, and finally the existing laws concerning its protection.
What is the challenge in outlining NDFs?
Referred to as “non-detriment findings”, these are intended to ensure that exports of individual listed animals and their products and derivatives, have not harmed wild populations or ecosystems which they have come from.
Because the Scientific Authority of each CITES Party is responsible for making NDFs and determining how to do so, the Conference of the Parties (CoP) has not produced binding technical criteria for undertaking NDFs—in other words, NDFs are specifically tailored for each country and it is the countries responsibility to undertake it. Therefore, considerable effort has been made by some CITES Parties, inter-governmental organisations (IGOs), non-governmental organisations (NGOs), the CITES Secretariat and the CoP to develop non-binding general and taxon-specific guidance for making NDFs. This is where IFAW steps in.
IFAW in cooperation with the Environment Authority, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Recourses, will provide an outline to collect data and complete the NDFs assessment for the most caught shark species in Oman: the silky and bigeye thresher sharks. Participants including local authorities as well as on-ground expertise such as the National Marine Research Centre, and the Environment Society of Oman, will be participating in the workshop and take part in completing the NDFs.
Why are NDFs important?
In the Arabian Seas alone, there are more than 30 different species of shark, and the majority need protection since three-quarters of the species studied are now threated with extinction according to IUCN criteria.
“To be able to protect species, we must know about them” says Akram Eissa Darwich, IFAW’s MENA Program Manager. He continues, “Undertaking NDFs in Oman will support the authorities in making the right decisions concerning trade which will ultimately save them”.
Undoubtedly, building capacity in this scientific route is a necessary step to combat wildlife trafficking, and those who will participate in this novice process will be fundamental in improving the national laws that regulate trade according to CITES.
Steps forward?
IFAW is encouraging other countries to follow lead and begin working on their NDFs which will enable them to develop their national legislation based on scientific research that will ultimately protect more animals that are endemic to the country, and is considered to many, an invaluable national treasure.
Moreover, IFAW is highlighting the importance of neighbouring countries working together as many of the species are migratory and their protection would be impossible without the collective effort of the countries and their unity in the conservation mission.

2022) Muscat, Oman (ARAB NEWSWIRE)
(Save Our Seas Foundation).
