A ‘Who’s Who’ of China’s leading developers gathered in Shanghai to celebrate the global design leader on November 9, 2017
(Shanghai, November 13, 2017) – The JERDE Partnership celebrated ’40 Years of Placemaking’ in Shanghai last week, with over 150 of China’s leading developers and architects in attendance to applaud the milestone of the global leader in styling award-winning city landmarks. Prominent industry names representing the major players in China’s real estate development attended the Shanghai celebration, including Mr. Hoi Kin Hong, Chairman of the Board, POWERLONG; Ms. Nan Xia, Chief Planner, HNA Real Estate; Ms. Zhiwei Chen, General Manager of Hangzhou project, Sino-Ocean Real Estate; Mr. Christopher Chan, President of Shanghai Chapter, The American Institution of Architects, etc.
Over the four decades since, The JERDE Partnership has defined the art of ‘placemaking’ – creating ‘places where people want to go’ – with over 100 iconic urban masterplans; from shopping and entertainment centers, casinos and resorts and residential complexes to office and commercial districts, and transit-connected community hubs.
“Placemaking is the art of making places where people want to go,” says CEO and Design Director John Simones. “The reason JERDE places are so popular is they are designed as experiential environments for people first. We envision differentiated and multi-layered experiential environments as a collective whole. These visions incorporate architecture with big ideas for the spaces between the buildings, where people connect and share a complex and real urban experience — where they experience The Place.” John Simones who has been with the brand since 1984 shot to prominence with the masterplan for the Los Angeles1984 Olympics, integrating 130 venues across Southern California and Los Angeles, which achieved the first profitable Olympics in nearly 50 years.
The firm’s first project in Asia, Canal City Hakata in Fukuoka, Japan, revitalized the entire port city, reversing years of decline. Within a year of opening in 1996, Asia Week dubbed Fukuoka “Best City in Asia”. JERDE’s influence on urban design in China began in Hong Kong, styling Langham Place Mongkok. The development revitalised the run-down district of Mongkok, connecting more than 300 shops and restaurants, along with a 5-star hotel and class-A office tower.
John Simones hosted the celebration as a showcase of The JERDE Partnership’s outstanding achievements over the years, including many of China’s most visionary urban developments, and shared the outlooks in the future. The event included presentation by Senior Design Principals Tammy McKerrow and Eduardo Lopez on The JERDE Partnership’s 40-year journey to the pinnacle of urban design.
“Our collaborative design approach, or co-creativity, blends architecture, landscape, interiors, environmental graphics, lighting and water features into a layered sense of discovery that draws visitors in, and connects them to an exploratory path,” noted Senior Vice President and Senior Design Principal, Tammy McKerrow, who has been with the firm since 1986, citing landmark concepts including West Hollywood Gateway, which jumpstarted revitalization of the city.
Senior VP and Senior Design Principal Eduardo Lopez, who has participated in the company's evolution since 1995 from a predominantly retail-oriented firm to one that leads the field in integrated mixed-use projects throughout the world, added: “Ultimately, JERDE projects transform sites, their surroundings and the cities in which they are located to create lasting and sustained value. This explains why over a billion people visit, live or work in JERDE-designed developments every year.”
To continually evolve ‘placemaking’ globally, JERDE brings together a diversity of design talent from various cultural backgrounds.
