Spring ICC Light and Music Show in collaboration with Art Basel and CityU School of Creative Media

The ICC Light and Music Show presented by Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited (SHKP) is a showcase of art blending music and animated stories on the facades of International Commerce Centre (ICC) – the tallest building in Hong Kong – to radiate positive energy to Hong Kong people and visitors.  The art expo starting from this month represents an international extravaganza displaying an array of artworks to echo with the aura of spring.  International artist Cao Fei lights up ICC with a new work commissioned by Art Basel and ICC.   Additionally, ICC is working with the School of Creative Media at the City University of Hong Kong on the Open Sky Campus initiative, and six selected audio-visual animation projects are playing on the facades of ICC.   

Art Basel to present “Same Old, Brand New” by internationally renowned artist

ICC and Art Basel have collaborated since 2014 to present audio-visual installations by internationally acclaimed artists. The work displayed last year by Berlin artist Carsten Nicolai was well received by Hong Kong public.  This year, Cao Fei, winner of Best Young Artist Award at the Chinese Contemporary Art Award (CCAA), pays tribute to video games from the 80s and adapts them to the contemporary context through her innovative ideas.  The animation, titled “Same Old, Brand New”, plays every night during the Art Basel show period, and throughout April and May.

Cao is one of the most internationally recognized Chinese artists well known for her multi-media installations and videos which integrate social commentary with popular aesthetics, references to Surrealism and documentary conventions.  Her works have been exhibited at a number of world-class art museums and galleries, including the New York Guggenheim Museum, New York International Center of Photography, MoMA, P.S.1, Au Palais de Tokyo, Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and Mori Art Museum, Tokyo.

Open Sky Campus unleashes student creativity

The Open Sky Campus commissioned by ICC Light and Music Show and School of Creative Media at CityU began half a year ago.  The initiative is meant to offer new opportunities for budding artists to play a part in public art production in the territory.  Students in the School’s Interactive and Urban Media master programme submitted light and music animations from one to five minutes for display on ICC.  Six were selected by a curatorial committee comprising representatives from ICC and the School are now being shown.

School of Creative Media Professor Maurice Benayoun said: “Our students’ works are debuting on the largest urban screen in the world.  In a sense our campus has expanded by 77,000 square metres, offering students more room to unleash their creativity.  For a work to get chosen for showing, it has to be interesting and meaningful, and to make the most of the tower’s massive walls.  Creations should also fit in the structure of ICC and be in harmony with the environment, which is very difficult.  We are pleased to see our students mastering the complexities and creating animations that show energy and innovation.”

“Hong Kong’s Rugby Spirit” light show to celebrate international sports event anniversary

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Hong Kong Sevens in 2015, ICC and the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union Community Foundation specially present “Hong Kong’s Rugby Spirit” light show, highlighting the qualities of striving for success, determination, teamwork, respect and pride – values shared by both Hong Kong and the sport of rugby.  The two-minute light show begins with a close up image of a rugby ball, followed by the animations of Dragon and Lion Dances, alongside classic rugby actions.  The players in the animation look energetic, with fans waving flags and cheering them on - what an exciting game to watch and a cool party to enjoy!  The light show will be presented in two sessions daily from March 20 to 29, immediately after Open Sky Campus performance.

About the ICC Light and Music Show

The ICC Light and Music Show on Hong Kong’s tallest building combines music and animated story themes using an advanced computer programme that controls the LEDs on the building facades to create images and produce an extravaganza of music and animation.  The best places for viewing the Show are the P3 and P4 public terraces of IFC Mall, which have advanced audio equipment broadcasting the music in sync with the Show. People can also download the ICC Light and Music Show smartphone app to hear the music while they watch from the shores of Victoria Harbour.

Art Basel in Hong Kong, whose Lead Partner is UBS, takes place from March 15, to March 17, 2015 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
