Manks is a renowned specialist in the region for the best of genuine Scandinavian furniture & lighting. Established in 1996, Manks has for 27 years, tirelessly promoted lifestyle and designer furniture, lighting, antiques and homeware from Scandinavia.
The recent launch of the Arne Jacobsen’s classic Ant chair with Danish Kvadrat front upholstery is yet another fine example of Manks dedication to Nordic design.
The Ant chair was designed in 1952 by iconic Danish architect Arne Jacobsen for the Novo Nordisk canteen. Novo Nordisk was and still is, a leading Danish global healthcare company. With the organic silhouette of the chair resembling that of an ant, this 1950s design is truly an endearing icon of Danish Modern Design. The original design of the Ant was 3-legged with the 4-legged version introduced in 1971. Both with continued production since.
Made from 9 layers of pressure molded veneer, the introduction of the Ant chair with its curved single piece pressed seat and back was a technical innovation back in 1950s. It paved the way for the creation of the iconic Series 7, Grand Prix and Lily chairs, a series of award-winning chairs all originating from the Ant.
The latest Ant is available in a myriad of shell and base colour variants. The launch of the Ant in soft grey with front upholstery in the finest Kvadrat grey fabric is modern, stylish to complement both metal or wooden legged tables. As mentioned by co-founder of Manks, Paul Fung, the 4-legged Ant chair goes perfectly with the Superellipse, Circular tables and Essay rectangular solid oak table which are from the same stable, Fritz Hansen.
Legendary Danish architect Arne Jacobsen is the most influential designer in Danish modern design to date. His masterpieces include the Egg chair, Series 7, Lily chairs and AJ lamp, most revered among design lovers. All of these Danish national treasures are presently on display at Manks.
The iconic Ant chair is produced by prestigious Danish furniture maker Fritz Hansen in Europe.
Founded in Denmark in 1872, Fritz Hansen is a global leader in furniture, lighting design and production. Driven by a passion for beauty, quality and craftsmanship, the company embodies a modern, Nordic lifestyle and collaborates with visionary designers from around the world such as Arne Jacobsen, Poul Kjaerholm, Cecilie Manz & Jamie Hayon.
The iconic Ant chair and its matching Circular & Essay tables are showcased in Manks 6,000 sq.ft. master showroom in Wong Chuk Hang, the southside of HK during the month of September.
[4 July 2023 – Hong Kong] This summer, Hong Kong Dance Company will present the first sports-themed, large-scale dance drama for families The Kids in Rainbow Jerseys at Sha Tin Town Hall from 18 to 20 August. The story is inspired by the perseverance, enthusiasm and drive demonstrated by the renowned Hong Kong cyclist Lee Wai-sze* (Sarah) in sports. Taking the form of dance, the story of the indomitable struggle behind every athlete’s pursuit of the gold medal is outlined, and it inspires children to bravely pursue their dreams. The story revolves around the protagonists Sai-yat and Tsz-kwan. They have been a fan of sports and cycling ever since they were kids. One of them is unusually talented, while the other is diligent and humble. Together they stride towards the goal of becoming the best in the world and initiate a wonderful competition involving bicycles and dreams. |
A group of professional dancers from Hong Kong Dance Company and close to 300 members of the Children's & Youth Troupes of the Company will exhaust their best to put up a good performance! With a diversity of interesting original dances and inspirational original songs, along with the set, lighting, costumes and videos created by a professional production team, the performance illustrates how athletes shine in various sports venues, striving hard on the runway, field, stage, and in the swimming pool. Do you still remember what it was like to have your first dream? The Kids in Rainbow Jerseys is set to create pulsating moments with you and reignite your long lost passion.
Famous Hong Kong cyclist—Lee Wai-sze* (Sarah) become the No. 1 Supporter
The Kids in Rainbow Jerseys is greatly supported by Hong Kong Sports Institute, and names the famous Hong Kong cyclist Lee Wai-sze* (Sarah), as ambassador for the dance drama. Sarah made a surprise appearance earlier by meeting up with the young dancers of the Children's Troupe of the Company and watched their dance rehearsals including "Badminton Dance", "Swimming Dance", "Table Tennis Dance" and "Ski Dance". Young dancers aged 6 to 12 transformed into elite athletes and showed off their skills. Sarah also shared a joyful chat with the little dancers. Not only did she share her own experience of how she got in touch with cycling when she was young and her journey of becoming an athlete, she also offered them some tips earned from her competitions. If they felt nervous while performing on stage, the best solution was to look at the smiling audience who could make them feel warm and courageous. Before leaving, she gave high fives to all the little dancers, and everyone was full of enthusiasm.

WHERE WE LAND, WHERE WE DANCE
WHERE WE LAND, WHERE WE DANCE

Dance Theatre Womanhood, a work that “touches the very heart”, explores how women discover and realise themselves in contemporary society. Four performances will be held at the Studio Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre from 12 to 14 May 2023. As Mother’s Day is approaching, this work embodies the expression of the sincerest love towards the greatest women in the world.
Xie Yin, former Assistant Artistic Director of Hong Kong Dance Company, has collaborated with the dance company as a freelance choreographer for the first time, creating a delicate and moving piece of dance theatre focusing on women. The choreographer shares her inspiration for the piece: “The name of this work originates from ‘Shadows Living with the Shape’, a phrase that encompasses dual meanings. One is to compare ‘shadows’ to memories, which means that memories forged in the past will always co-exist with life at present. The other meaning is that ‘shape’ is reminiscent of the dancer’s body, implying that the choreographer and the dancer need to consider how to use the body’s movement and dialogue to interpret those unspeakably rich emotions that seem so far, yet so close."
Five female dancers from different cities, with distinctly different backgrounds and life experiences, manage to cross paths with their former selves again through the common theme of “memory”. In that space between light and darkness, the reflection of the light leads the women on a journey through time, revealing a deeper understanding of their heartland, their family, themselves, and dance, and narrating the evolution of women at different life stages through their own experiences, feeling their joy and their sorrow.
Looking back at the past is not intended to encourage regret or stubborn nostalgia but is an attempt to let go of contradictions and entanglements from the past and prepare the mind for a new journey. In the words of Michelle Yeoh when she became the first Asian woman to win an Academy Award for Best Actress: “Ladies, don’t let anybody tell you that you are ever past your prime. Never give up.”

Hong Kong Dance Company 2022/23 Dance Season Opening
Anthology of Chaoxian and Korean Folk Dance: Myth of the Dancing Durumi
The Elegant Beauty of the Dancing Crane
Korean folk dances have a refined elegance that evokes images of a durumi (Korean crane) in flight. Breathing out, the dancers effortlessly glide. Breathing in, they pause with a subtle grace. Their colourful traditional Korean costumes move in harmony with the distinctive rhythms of their folk tunes. Hong Kong Dance Company is bringing works of Seoul and Yanbian artists – The Moon by Dr Han Hyo-lim and Of Sun, Rain and Our Land by Prof Jin Yinghua, from 9-11 September 2022 at Auditorium, Sha Tin Town Hall and 16-18 September 2022 at Auditorium, Yuen Long Theatre, together in Hong Kong for the first time, dancers of Hong Kong Dance Company are going to showcase the traditional charm and contemporary elegance inherent in Chaoxian and Korean dance.
Of Sun, Rain and Our Land – 6 Traditional Chaoxian Dance Pieces by Yanbian Dance Artist
Prof Jin Yinghua, an ardent promoter and educator of the folk dance of the Chaoxian ethnic group, is the Deputy Dean of the College of Arts at Yanbian University, and Vice Chair of Yanbian Dancers Association and Jilin Province Literature and Art Critics Association. She was elected one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of Jilin Province. She has selected six riveting dance pieces – Of Sun, Rain and Our Land for our audience to showcase the unique beauty of the Chaoxian ethnic group.
Second Collaboration with Korean Dance Artist – The Moon Commissioned Work’s World Premiere
Korean Choreographer Dr Han Hyo-lim once again collaborates with the Hong Kong Dance Company. Back in 2018, Dr Han presented Furious Sea – Memory on Ube in Tale of Three Cities, a dance which commemorates the victims of the 1942 Chosei Coal Mine disaster. In the dance performance The Moon, world premiere dance piece commissioned by HKDC, Dr Han looks into Korean Shamanism and folklore to recreate the mysterious shamanistic rituals in dance.
An Exciting Variety of Programme Plus Events to Introduce Chaoxian Folk Dance
Hong Kong Dance Company is organising a series of Programme Plus Events to facilitate a better understanding of Chaoxian folk dance among folk dance lovers and the public. Last month, HKDC called for entries for the Myth of the Dancing Durumi Online Open Korean Folk Dance Contest for three groups of participants: Toddler Division, Student Division and Open Division. 19 participating teams have since registered. Announcement of the winning teams will be made by end of August. The winning teams would have the chance to showcase their works in another fringe activity The Harvest Moon - Journey into Traditional Chaoxian Culture which will be held in late September. HKDC was invited by eslite Hong Kong to perform Myth of the Dancing Durumi - The Elegant Beauty of the Dancing Crane at its 10th anniversary celebration at eslite Forum in Hysan Place on 13 August. The performance was led by Ms Lou Wen, Dance Tutor and Researcher from Yanbian University, who was specially invited by HKDC to lead a group of dancers for demonstrating Chaoxian folk dance. The interaction with the audience was one of the highlights of the event.
For online activities, Ms Lou Wen is featured in a series of ten episodes in the Cultural Exchange Artist's Vlog of Myth of the Dancing Durumi where she shared with us her stay in Hong Kong as an exchange artist.
An exhibition on Chaoxian culture and folk dance for Myth of the Dancing Durumi will be held from 3 to 18 September at the Exhibition Corner of Yuen Long Theatre. The exhibition is free-of-charge. In addition, The Harvest Moon - Journey into Traditional Korean Culture will be held on 25 September at the Exhibition Gallery of Sha Tin Town Hall. The event promotes and cultivates further understanding of the techniques of Chaoxian folk dance through a Master Class and a demo dance performance.

The performance was of HKDC with Singapore’s professional dance company, Maya Dance Theatre, wfrom Convergence, a three-year “Research Study on Chinese martial arts and Chinese dance” by HKDC. Mentored by HKDC's Artistic Director Yang Yuntao via online workshops, the Singaporean dancers have explored southern Chinese martial arts and its quintessential rhythmic patterns of the body. They have brought in elements of Bharathanatyam, a classical Indian dance, and traditional Javanese dance, and created an exceptional contemporary dance theatre work together with HKDC.
The programme is supported by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Singapore as part of the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, showcasing Hong Kong as a centre for cultural and artistic exchange between China and overseas.
The Research Study on Chinese Martial Arts and Chinese Dance/ Convergence
The research study explored new dance forms and new directions for traditional Chinese dance training. The research team included HKDC’s Artistic Director Yang Yuntao, as well as dancers, kung fu masters, academic researchers and experts in the field. Over the course of three years from 2018-2020, the artists explored the essence of both traditional practices, extracting new perspectives on movement and the fluidity of expression between ideology and physical gesture, seeking to construct a richer texture of dance. Convergence – a performance that was staged in 2020 to mark the culmination of the inter-disciplinary research study, captured the transient state between stillness and motion between dance and martial arts.

4)Pocket
