The newly developed ultra-high-pixel full-frame Canon CMOS sensor with approximately 50.6 megapixels features gapless microlens technology and refined semiconductor manufacturing process to ensure low noise and wide dynamic range performance for ultra-high-pixel images. EOS 5DS R is designed with the effect of optical low pass filter cancelled1to maximize the sharpness and clarity of the ultra-high-pixel resolving power. The ultra-high resolution of EOS 5DS / EOS 5DS R can deliver delicate, true-to-life images with overwhelming details, producing magnificent images for landscape photography that requires a higher sense of resolution. The high-pixel performance also meets the need of commercial photography that often requires large-scale printing and provides maximum freedom for image trimming and partial enlargement, as well as creating detail-rich photographic materials suitable for retouching and composition. EOS 5DS / EOS 5DS R features Dual “DIGIC 6” digital image processors, providing ultra-high algorithm power to process the massive image data came from ultra-high resolution shooting to realize highly detailed and low noise images. Benefited from the outstanding performance of CMOS sensor and Dual “DIGIC 6” digital image processors, standard ISO available for 50.6-megapixel shooting ranges from ISO 100-6400 and is expandable to L: 50 and H: 12800, allowing photographers to shoot with ease at both indoor and outdoor. Thanks to the CMOS sensor’s 16-channel high-speed readout, the cameras support up to 5FPS High Speed Continuous Shooting at full resolution, empowering users with both image quality and shooting agility to capture every split-second moment. Offering a super high resolution on par with the medium format cameras in a smaller and lighter body, EOS 5DS / EOS 5DS R allows photographers to take advantage of the synergy of high image quality and flexible mobility to explore different shooting locations and creative possibilities. Coupled with over 60 full-frame EF lenses that provide a wider selection on focal range coverage as well as powerful lens performance to realize a wide spectrum of imaging expression possibilities, both models provide attractive options for advanced users. New Mirror Vibration Control System (MVCS) and “Fine Detail” Picture Style to Ensure Sharpness and Details in Ultra-High-Pixel Images To fully unleash the cameras’ ultra-high resolution power, EOS 5DS / EOS 5DS R adopts a new Mirror Vibration Control System (MVCS) – a mirror control mechanism driven by motor and cams. Unlike conventional spring design, the new mechanism can reduce the collision shock and thus suppress camera-shake blurring due to mirror motion to ensure image sharpness. The rigidity of the tripod socket and surrounding parts has also been improved to further reduce camera vibrations caused by mirror motion. A new “Fine Detail” Picture Style is also added to maximize the cameras’ high resolving power and material texture reproduction ability. The sharpness setting of this new Picture Style is designed to prioritize gradations and detail depiction so that edges of thin lines and textures can be emphasized easily, and outlines of objects appear thinner. A great sense of 50.6-megapixel image quality is thus maintained. In addition, “Fineness” and “Threshold” parameters are added to the sharpness setting in Picture Style for fine adjustment of sharpening effect. “Fineness” can be used to achieve thinner and sharper edges while “Threshold” can be used to sharpen those subtle, low-contrast edges to achieve a higher sense of resolution in details. 61-Point AF System and EOS iTR AF to Achieve Fast and Precise AF in Ultra-High-Pixel Shooting High AF precision is extremely important especially in ultra-high resolution shooting. EOS 5DS / EOS 5DS R is equipped with the same high precision 61-point High Density Reticular AF sensor found in EOS 5D Mark III to achieve the high level of focusing precision. Providing more compositional freedom with the wide coverage of AF points, the 61-point AF system features a maximum of 41 cross-type AF points. When used with lenses with a maximum aperture of f/2.8 or faster, five f/2.8-sensitive cross-type AF points in a vertical arrangement can be used at the center. To achieve an even higher level of AF precision, two line sensors are placed within each AF point and are arranged in an offset array with the pixel position staggered. This can increase the resolution and AF sensor sensitivity without the need to increase the density of AF sensor to ensure high precision measurement. Low-contrast subjects, which are generally difficult for autofocus, are now easier to focus on. In both One Shot AF and AI Servo AF modes, dual-line focusing is always used for Single-Point AF and Single-Point Spot AF to ensure fast and accurate AF performance. A new 150,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor supports 252-zone metering and detects Red (R), Green (G), Blue (B) and Near Infra-red (IR) information for more accurate analysis from “EOS Scene Detection System”. This guarantees optimally exposed images with a higher level of white balance accuracy for both indoor and outdoor shooting under natural or artificial lights. Auto White Balance (White Priority)function is newly added for easy indoor shooting under tungsten lights. Benefited from the 150,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor, EOS 5DS / EOS 5DS R also features EOS iSA (Intelligent Subject Analysis) system and EOS iTR (Intelligent Tracking and Recognition) AF function. EOS iSA system can detect the subject by face data and colour information gathered by the RGB+IR metering sensor to enhance auto exposure, autofocus and auto white balance under different light sources, while EOS iTR AF function can make use of the colour and face information from EOS iSA system to track recognized subject in optical viewfinder and keep the subject in focus throughout the scene using all 61 AF points2. In addition, EOS 5DS / EOS 5DS R is equipped with “Anti-Flicker Shooting” function to ensure consistent brightness and colour when shooting bursts of images under artificial lights. When enabled, the AE system will detect the cycle of flickering light sources such as fluorescent light and mercury light, and adjust the shutter release timing of each shot to coincide with the peak brightness of light source to achieve consistent results during continuous shooting. A Host of New Functions and Professional Specifications for Enhanced Operability and Performance EOS 5DS / EOS 5DS R features an optical viewfinder with 100% coverage and 0.71x magnification, supporting “Intelligent Viewfinder II” with on-demand AF Points, dual-axis electronic level, gridline display and various camera settings display such as white balance, drive mode, AF operation, metering mode, recording format and flicker detection to give users total flexibility and confidence in shooting and composition without leaving the viewfinder. Taking advantage of the cameras’ ultra-high pixels, new 1.3x and 1.6x Crop Shooting modes are added for the first time to provide extra convenience to capture distant subjects as if using an extender. It offers extra reach for users who do not have the time to switch lens or use only a lens with shorter focal length, and is especially useful for bird and sports photography. When using 1.6x Crop Shooting mode, high resolution images up to 20 megapixels can be achieved, and improved capability of subject tracking can be expected as almost the entire frame is covered by AF points. To help achieve accurate composition, the cropped area can be displayed in the optical viewfinder with either a crop frame box or black masking. To cater to various habits of users and bring enhanced operability, in addition to the original Quick Control screen, the cameras support a new customizable “Quick Control screen” which allows users to display and arrange the on-screen items freely based on personal preference and shooting needs, making it more convenient to check or adjust the settings. Users can add or remove items like shooting mode, aperture value, shutter speed, ISO speed, exposure compensation, AF points and white balance, and flexibly change the sizes and placement. EOS 5DS / EOS 5DS R is also equipped with built-in “Interval Timer” and “Bulb Timer” for convenient capture of time-lapse images and long-exposure images by setting the numbers of shots with designated interval and bulb exposure time respectively, ideal for recording fireworks, star trails and sunrises. Full HD EOS Movie and New “Time-Lapse Movie” Function for Fabulous Movie Expressions In addition to excellent still performance, EOS 5DS / EOS 5DS R supports Full HD (1920 x 1080) EOS Movie with 3 selectable frame rates including the cinematographic 23.98p, 25.00p and 29.97p. A Full HD Time-Lapse movie shooting function is also featured for the first time among the EOS series. By setting the exposure interval and number of shots, a series of still images shot over the specific interval will be automatically saved to a Full HD time-lapse movie3. This allows easy creation of creative movies and is ideal for condensing the progression of slow moving subjects, such as the record of plant growth, streams of car lights, flowing clouds and the changing cityscapes from day to night. To meet the changing subject speeds and duration of shooting needs, the exposure interval can be set from 1 sec. to 99 hrs., 59 min., 59 sec.
