Kellett’s Principal Ann Mc Donald today retired after 23 year of dedicated service to the School. Over more than two decades, Ms Mc Donald led Kellett’s transformation from a small primary school to one of Hong Kong’s leading international schools. She joined the School as Principal in 1996 and led Kellett through defining occasions, including the Handover in 1997 and SARs in 2003 to spearheading the expansion of the School with the opening of the award-winning Kowloon Bay campus in 2013 and the School’s 40th anniversary in 2016.
This month, Ann Mc Donald was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to education and the British community in Hong Kong. The OBE is in recognition of the incredible contribution Ann has made to the education sector. After she leaves Hong Kong, she intends to spend her retirement in Gloucestershire where she grew up.
“I have been truly blessed to have spent so much of my career at Kellett, working with passionate colleagues, members of the Board, legions of dedicated parents, and most importantly, the most impressive group of young people that make me proud every day. I will miss everyone deeply, but I know that the Kellett community will continue to thrive because the culture of a love of learning is so deeply embedded,” said Ann Mc Donald.
Under her tenure, the school has grown from a small primary school to an internationally recognised independent through school with campuses in Pok Fu Lam and Kowloon Bay educating over 1350 students. This year, Ann Mc Donald was made a member of The Headmasters’ and Headmistress’ Conference, a professional association of the heads of the world's leading independent schools.
“Our community has been very fortunate that Ann has given so much of her career to Kellett. Without her vision, compassion and leadership, the School would not be the leading educational institution it is today. So much has changed in education – the inspections, the public exams, the range of subjects, the expectations of parents and the students themselves – but one thing has remained constant: Ann’s deep-seated commitment to Kellett and its students,” said Peter Goulston, Chairman of the Board of Governors at Kellett.
The School is paying tribute to Ann Mc Donald’s leadership through the establishment of The Ann Mc Donald Fund for Bursaries and Scholarships. The AMD Fund aims to celebrate two aspects of education close to her heart – offering opportunity and achieving personal excellence. For more information on the Fund, click here.
From August 2019, Mark Steed will be the School’s Principal and CEO. Most recently Mark Steed was Director of the not-for-profit Jumeirah English Speaking School (JESS) in Dubai for four years.
