(Hong Kong – 12 February 2018) Opera Gallery Hong Kong is delighted to participate in Art Central 2018 with a stand incorporating the broad range of aesthetic and geographical dialogues that reflect the inter-continental focus of the gallery program. This year Opera Gallery will feature the work of Yasmina Alaoui, Fernando Botero, Mike Dargas, Cho Sung-Hee, Andy Denzler, Yves Klein, Yayoi Kusama, Lee Ufan, Valay Shende, Suh Jeong-Min, Manolo Valdés, David Kim Whittaker and Yoo Bong-Sang.
Key highlights from the stand include Opera Gallery’s inaugural presentation of Spanish artist Manolo Valdés to Hong Kong collectors at Art Central. Further highlights include a large scale work by the German Hyperrealist painter Mike Dargas, created specifically for Art Central on the back of his hugely successful first solo exhibition in Asia at Opera Gallery Hong Kong in late January. The stand will also feature a body of new works by Korean artist Suh Jeong-Min.
A dominant theme from the exhibited artists will be differing approaches to contemporary portraiture with a presentation of artists from multifarious cultural and artistic backgrounds. Works exhibited will include those of Fernando Botero with his distinctive “enlarged” distorted figuration, Andy Denzler’s portraiture in which we can see the integration of new-media and computer graphics to create aesthetics that reflect the alienation of the techno-society, Manolo Valdés’ deeply art historically infused portraits with their inherent tactility, Valay Shende’s politicized sculptural installations questioning the maladies afflicting urban society and David Kim Whittaker’s metaphysical work that questions the existential basis of the “self”.
Concurrently, within many of the artists exhibited there is an acute interest in contrast, oppositions and balance. Be it Yasmina Alaoui’s interest in the secular and holy, repulsion and attraction, or Yayoi Kusama’s pursuit of inner peace through painting, there are a variety of approaches to the polarities within the natural, psychological or cultural spheres. This avenue within the exhibition is particularly relevant to the body of Korean artists that Opera Gallery will display, including the work of Lee Ufan, Cho Sung-Hee, Suh Jeong-Min and Yoo Bong-Sang. Through their different conceptual and compositional styles each artist brings out a different strain of the vibrant Korean artistic scene. With an astute and nuanced treatment of the iconography of nature, landscape and eastern philosophies, their work displays their commonality of harmonic tone alongside diverse methodologies and medium.
Opera Gallery Hong Kong looks forward to welcoming you to their stand and sharing the vibrant and diverse works on display with our local and international collectors.
