Digital Business Lab collaborated with cultural trailblazer HKwalls and Hong Kong graffiti artist XEME to design an Art Tram. After months of preparation and discussion, the Art Tram designed with XEME’s iconic pixels departed from the tram depot on April 18, 2020 and start its month-long run on Hong Kong Island.
Digital Business Lab, a social media agency based in Hong Kong and Singapore is the main patron behind this art project collaboration. “We’re always looking for opportunities to create and to share creativity. Our continued efforts in encouraging and supporting local artists have culminated in this big announcement,” said Albin Lix, founder of Digital Business Lab.
As a non-profit arts organization based in Hong Kong, HKwalls actively connects with individual artists, the art community and different organizations around the world to make high-quality public art accessible to all. “One of our main goals is to create opportunities for artists to showcase their work,” said Jason Dembski, artist, curator, and co-founder of HKwalls. “Digital Business Lab approached us with an opportunity to create art on a tram, then we introduced several artists, including XEME, who in the end we agreed was the best fit for this collaboration,” he said.
XEME is an artist based in Hong Kong, who constantly experiments with different styles but never straying away from his graffiti background. “One day, Digital Business Lab contacted me through HKwalls and presented me this opportunity to design the exterior of a tram. They gave me the freedom to paint anything on this blank canvas, and since I’m trying out pixel art, why not make this into a piece of ‘art world meeting the digital world’?” XEME explained.
The citywide graffiti showcase is on the tracks and will run for at least a month on Hong Kong Island. Digital Business Lab, HKwalls and XEME will continue to share interesting behind-the-scenes content, live updates and also a photo contest in the coming weeks.
