Hong Kong, March 12th, 2018: In less than 2 weeks the 12th edition of the Asia Contemporary Art Show will open. The first art fair in this year’s Hong Kong Arts Month, the Show opens on March 23rd and continues until the 26th at the Conrad Hong Kong. As the longest-running and most successful hotel art fair in Asia, the Show will feature artworks: original paintings, limited editions, sculpture and photography by some of the world's most interesting and promising artists.
Beginning on Friday, March 23rd, arts patrons and select guests will be welcomed at the exclusive UnionPay Private View, followed by the invitation-only UnionPay VIP Collectors Preview. General admission opens on Saturday, March 24th with fun HK Liquor Store Art Night, and continues until Monday, March 26th.
“Art is a journey of discovery,” remarked Show Director Mark Saunderson, “at the Asia Contemporary Art Show, we invite visitors to immerse themselves and discover art. The sector Artist Dialogues was expressly created to encourage direct interaction between artists and visitors, giving visitors the opportunity to learn about artists’ inspiration and artistic practice. To allow visitors to understand the art on display, the Show has in conjunction with Accidental Art arranged a series of guided tours.”
Saunderson continues, “We are excited to present so many different artists, each with their own distinctive narrative and style. Take for example Emma Hack whose body camouflage paintings are inspired by the unique flora and fauna of her native Australia. Illustrator Jeff Murray creates visuals inspired by music, film, lifestyle and exploration of travel for you to get lost within. Gareth Griffiths’ sculptures takes inspiration from 1950s era West Coast “Googie” architecture with their flowing lines, abstract cut-outs and upswept roofs. The Luo Brothers use gaudy art to reflect on the socio-economic and cultural changes in China. There’s simply so much to see and take in at the Show, of course the opportunity to buy a piece or two.”
Ai Weiwei, China - Macey & Sons, Room 4226
Ai Weiwei (b. 1957) is an activist, architect, curator, filmmaker, and China’s most famous artist. Some of Ai’s best known works are installations, often tending towards the conceptual and sparking dialogue between the contemporary world and traditional Chinese modes of thought and production. Ai served as artistic consultant on the design of the “Bird’s Nest” stadium for Beijing’s 2008 Olympics, and has curated pavilions and museum exhibitions around the globe.
"Hanging Man in Porcelain" by Ai Weiwei, Macey & Sons, Hong Kong, Room 4226
Jeff Murray, United Kingdom – Room 4126
Jeff Murray (b. 1986) creates visuals that art lovers can get lost within, making you find something new each time. With inspiration taken from the exploration of the world, the endless search for new outcomes never tires. By drawing these vivid ideas in art formations, they allow you to step into an intricate world of surreal illusions, intertwining natural surroundings and realistic impressions.
"Florence" by Jeff Murray, United Kingdom, Room 4126
Gareth Griffiths, United Kingdom – Fabrik Gallery,
Room 4311
Gareth Griffiths’ sculptures are influenced by West Coast American architecture called “Googie” that incorporated flowing lines, odd abstract cut-outs, upswept roofs, boomerang shapes that looked more like works of art rather than simply functional buildings. Griffiths’ sculptures are colourful and eye catching and are made with the intention of catching people’s attention and drawing people closer.
“Graciosa Blue” by Gareth Griffiths, Fabrik Gallery, Hong Kong, Room 4311
David Roy Ocotla, Mexico – X Espacio, Room 4223
David Roy Ocotla’s (b. 1984) work is recognized for his iconic portraits with a strong influence of urban art mixed with classical visual art techniques, that elevate and captivate the feelings of those that inspire him. He bases himself on the dialogue and the exercise of understanding and questioning his environment and daily space, through the diverse pictorial, visual and conceptual problematics.
“Violetal” by David Roy Ocotla, X Espacio, Mexico, Room 4223
Moon Hyeong-Tae, Korea – GALLERY MAC, Room 4016
Moon Hyeong-Tae (b. 1976) expresses his daily routines, experiences and surroundings through his work. With their distorted shapes and colors, they create surrealistic scenes, which extend beyond the documentary recording of his daily routines, to express the artist’s emotions and experiences as well.
“Supercar” by Moon Hyeong-Tae, GALLERY MAC, South Korea, Room 4016
Emma Hack, Australia – Emma Hack Gallery, Room 4203
Emma Hack (b. 1972) has received great acclaim for her refined body paint camouflage technique; through a combination of painting on canvas, body painting and studio-based photography, her work evokes a rich array of visual narrative and magical realism. Emma Hack’s diverse artwork collections draw inspiration from the unique Australian flora and fauna, as well as Oriental influences and expanding to fine embroidered portraits.
"Zola with Lillies" by Emma Hack, Emma Hack Gallery, Australia, Room 4203
Mie Kodama, Japan – Wamono Art, Room 4308
Mie Kodama’s (b. 1976) series of circular woven works are inspired by the beauty of nature: the moon, trees, sunset reflected on the surface of a lake. Her multi-layered works use “Susutake”, a smoked and deep brown bamboo. Her works evoke the calmness of nature that at the same time provide a deeper understanding of the world around us.
“Corona of the Sun” by Mie Kodama, Wamono Art, Japan, Room 4308
Luis Fuentes, Peru, Room 4120
Luis Fuentes’ (b. 1969) paintings are an invitation into a peaceful world where the sea is the main protagonist. Luis has the ability to take the viewer on a trip through open windows for an enjoyable walk on the sand, rocks and water. One of the most important elements of Luis’ artwork is the contrast between light and shadow, giving his works a glowing illusion of reality.
“Light on the Window” by Luis Fuentes, Peru, Room 4120
Yoo Sun-Tai, Korea – Galerie GAIA, Room 4306
Yoo Sun-Tai (b. 1957) is one of Korea's most widely recognized contemporary artists. While pursuing his PhD in Paris, the artist developed his now well-known style of three-dimensional painting. Yoo is obsessed with objects, which he utilises as metaphors for life’s elements whose meanings depend on personal imagination or interpretation.
"The Words 1" by Yoo, Sun-Tai, Galerie GAIA, South Korea, Room 4306
Luo Brothers, China – Amanda Wei Gallery, Room 4326
Luo Weidong, Luo Weiguo, Luo Weibing-- called "Luo Brothers" are some of the earliest Chinese contemporary artists to have influences on artistic communities in the Western world. Coming from the southern Chinese province of Guangxi, they represent the classic "gaudy" art. Their works serve as a barometer for the socio-economic and cultural change in China.
“Welcome 10” by Luo Brothers, Amanda Wei Gallery, Hong Kong, Room 4326
Jean-Marc Peyer, France, Room 4106
Jean-Marc Peyer (b. 1948) is a French-Swiss artist residing in the South of France. His paintings represent his vision and deep feelings for this luminous, harsh and sometimes very mysterious Provence. The strength of the colours, the shapes, bring forward an atmosphere of peace and warmth, occasionally with a hint towards abstraction. A very personal and stylized representation, which has brought him worldwide recognition.
